Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers Lead Historic NASA All-Women Spacewalk

In a landmark achievement for space exploration and gender representation, NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers led the agency’s latest all-women spacewalk, continuing the legacy of female pioneers in space while breaking new ground for future missions.

This historic extravehicular activity (EVA), conducted aboard the International Space Station (ISS), marked the first time that McClain and Ayers paired together for a mission of this scale. The primary objective of the spacewalk was to upgrade the station’s power systems and conduct maintenance on the solar arrays—tasks critical to supporting the upcoming Artemis lunar missions and expanding ISS operations through the decade.

Anne McClain, a decorated U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and a former combat helicopter pilot, returned to space after her 2018–2019 ISS expedition. Nichole Ayers, a U.S. Air Force test pilot and member of NASA’s Artemis astronaut cadre, made her EVA debut with precision and professionalism, showcasing the growing role of women in high-stakes spaceflight roles.

Training for the Future

Both astronauts trained rigorously at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, preparing for complex EVA procedures under simulated microgravity conditions. The coordination required during the six-and-a-half-hour spacewalk demonstrated their seamless teamwork and mastery of the technology aboard the ISS.

Beyond immediate mission goals, the spacewalk also tested tools and procedures for future deep-space EVAs, especially those planned for the Moon’s surface under Artemis III and beyond.
