RCB Crowned IPL Champions: An 18-Year Wait Ends for Virat Kohli and Bengaluru

June 4, 2025

In a moment etched forever in cricketing history, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally lifted their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy, ending an 18-year-long drought and delivering an emotional climax to one of the most beloved franchises in the league. The final, played at a packed Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, witnessed a sea of red as RCB defeated Rajasthan Royals in a thrilling contest to claim the 2025 IPL title.

Virat Kohli’s Dream Realized

At the center of the celebration stood Virat Kohli, teary-eyed and visibly overwhelmed. The modern-day legend, who has been the face of RCB since the inception of the league in 2008, finally tasted championship glory in what many believe could be one of his final seasons.

“This is not just a trophy. It’s 18 years of hope, heartbreaks, and belief. I’ve waited for this all my life,” Kohli said post-match, as chants of “Ee Sala Cup Namde” echoed throughout the stadium.

Kohli, who played a crucial anchoring role in the final with a gritty 57 off 38 balls, was instrumental throughout the tournament, finishing among the top five run-scorers.

Bengaluru Rejoices

The city of Bengaluru, often mocked for its trophy-less IPL history despite a strong fanbase and some of the biggest names in cricket, erupted in celebration. Thousands thronged MG Road, Brigade Road, and Cubbon Park, lighting up the night sky with fireworks.

From heartbreak in the 2009, 2011, and 2016 finals to this triumphant moment, the journey has been nothing short of cinematic for RCB fans.

The Turning Point

RCB’s title run was driven by a balanced team effort. Faf du Plessis, the captain, provided calm leadership, Glenn Maxwell rediscovered his explosive best, and the bowling unit—led by Mohammed Siraj, Yash Dayal, and Karn Sharma—delivered consistently in high-pressure moments.

In the final, RCB posted a solid 184/6 and then restricted Rajasthan Royals to 172, with Siraj taking 3 wickets and earning the Player of the Match award.

A Redemption Arc

RCB’s 2025 season was nothing short of a redemption arc. Written off early in the season after back-to-back losses, the team rallied together with six straight wins, displaying a fearless brand of cricket. The playoff victories against Kolkata Knight Riders and then the defending champions Chennai Super Kings added emotional fuel to their fairytale run.

Kohli’s Legacy Sealed

With this title, Virat Kohli’s legacy as an all-format great is now complete. He remains the only player to represent a single franchise throughout his IPL career and finally has a championship to show for his unwavering loyalty.

RCB’s win was not just a sporting triumph, but an emotional closure for fans who stood by the team through thick and thin. In many ways, this victory was not just about cricket—it was about hope, faith, and the unbreakable bond between a team and its people.

Final Scorecard Snapshot: IPL 2025 Final

  • RCB: 184/6 (Kohli 57, Maxwell 42, Boult 2/29)

  • RR: 172/9 (Jaiswal 48, Samson 33, Siraj 3/24)

  • RCB won by 12 runs

RCB are finally champions. And somewhere in Bengaluru, the skies wept — not with rain, but with joy.
