Not Indians: Government fact-checks photo showing immigrants handcuffed, chained

adminBy adminFebruary 6, 2025

Recent reports have highlighted the deportation of 104 Indian nationals from the United States to India. Amid these reports, images have surfaced online depicting individuals in handcuffs and chains, leading to claims that these photos show Indian deportees. However, upon investigation, it has been clarified that these images do not pertain to Indian nationals.

A fact-check by NewsMeter revealed that the circulating photos are unrelated to the recent deportation of Indian immigrants. One of the images, showing men walking with their hands held behind their backs, was traced back to a video shared on January 30, 2025, by the Twitter account @ViralNewsNYC. The video depicts U.S. Border Patrol agents escorting individuals back into Mexico, predating the deportation of Indian migrants on February 3, 2025.

Another image, showing individuals seated inside a military aircraft with their ankles chained, was found to be from a deportation flight to Guatemala. The Associated Press had reported on January 31, 2025, that a U.S. Air Force jet departed Texas for Guatemala, carrying 80 deportees bound at their wrists and ankles. This image is unrelated to the deportation of Indian nationals.

Furthermore, a photograph showing several men handcuffed while boarding a military aircraft was identified as being shared by the official White House Twitter account on January 24, 2025. The post emphasized the U.S. administration’s stance on illegal immigration and was not specific to Indian deportees.

In summary, the images circulating on social media do not depict Indian immigrants deported from the United States. They have been misattributed and are unrelated to the recent deportation events involving Indian nationals.
