Maha Kumbh: Over 1 crore likely to attend last Amrit Snan on Mahashivratri

adminBy adminFebruary 25, 2025

The Maha Kumbh Mela of 2025, held in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, is approaching its conclusion on February 26, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri. This year’s festival has witnessed an unprecedented influx of devotees, with official estimates indicating that over 60 crore (600 million) pilgrims have participated in the sacred bathing rituals at the Triveni Sangam—the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers.

The Uttar Pradesh government anticipates that the total number of participants will surpass 65 crore (650 million) by the festival’s end. This remarkable turnout signifies that more than half of India’s approximately 110 crore (1.1 billion) Sanatan Dharma followers have taken part in the Maha Kumbh Mela.

The festival commenced on January 13, 2025, and has featured several significant bathing dates, known as Amrit Snans. The Mauni Amavasya on January 29 witnessed the highest single-day attendance, with nearly 8 crore (80 million) devotees taking the holy dip. Makar Sankranti on January 14 saw around 3.5 crore (35 million) participants, while Basant Panchami on February 3 attracted approximately 2.57 crore (25.7 million) pilgrims.

Despite meticulous planning and extensive infrastructure developments, the massive congregation posed significant challenges. Tragically, on January 29, during the Mauni Amavasya Amrit Snan, a crowd crush resulted in at least 30 fatalities and numerous injuries. The incident underscored the complexities involved in managing such an enormous gathering.

In response to the overwhelming turnout, authorities implemented advanced crowd management strategies, including the deployment of artificial intelligence-powered cameras and the construction of temporary infrastructures such as pontoon bridges and extensive tent accommodations. These measures aimed to ensure the safety and well-being of the pilgrims.

As the final Amrit Snan on Maha Shivratri approaches, the administration continues to emphasize safety protocols and efficient crowd control to facilitate a serene and spiritually fulfilling experience for the remaining devotees.Maha Kumbh: Over 1 crore likely to attend last Amrit Snan on Mahashivratri
