Anti-Hindu Rhetoric and Provocative Imagery at Toronto Parade Spark Diplomatic Tensions

adminBy adminMay 5, 2025

A recent parade in Toronto has intensified diplomatic strains between India and Canada, as pro-Khalistan elements displayed provocative imagery and slogans targeting Indian political figures and the Hindu community.

Controversial Depictions at Khalsa Day Parade

During the Khalsa Day parade in Malton, Greater Toronto Area, organized by the Ontario Gurdwara Committee, participants showcased a float depicting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a prisoner’s jumpsuit behind bars, under a banner reading “Canada’s Citizen Court.” This display was accompanied by Khalistan flags and separatist slogans, with speeches from figures like Paramjit Mand of Dal Khalsa and Avtar Singh Pannu, who is designated a terrorist by Indian authorities .

India’s Strong Condemnation

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep concern over the “violent imagery” used against its political leadership. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “Celebration and glorification of violence should not be a part of any civilized society,” urging Canada to cease providing a safe haven for criminal and secessionist elements .

Anti-Hindu Rhetoric at India Day Parade

In a separate incident, pro-Khalistan groups disrupted the India Day Parade in Toronto, marking India’s Independence Day. Protesters reportedly shouted slogans like “Canadian Hindus go back to India,” and circulated flyers calling for a “face-off” between “Khalistan Sikhs” and “Canadian Hindus.” These actions were condemned by Indo-Canadian organizations, including the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) and Canadian Hindu Volunteers, who labeled the rhetoric as “blatant Hinduphobia” and urged Canadian authorities to address such hate speech .

Ongoing Diplomatic Strain

These events occur amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, exacerbated by Canada’s allegations of Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. India has consistently denied these claims, labeling them as “absurd” and “motivated” .

The recent displays and rhetoric have further strained relations, with India emphasizing the need for Canada to uphold the rule of law and prevent the glorification of violence and hate speech within its borders.
