As Pahalgam’s Poster Child of Justice Faces Hate, Women Panel’s Tough Message Resonates

adminBy adminMay 5, 2025

Once celebrated as the symbol of courage and resilience in the scenic town of Pahalgam, 24-year-old Zarina Bhat is now facing a wave of hate and intimidation after standing firm for justice in a high-profile local case. As threats grow louder and social media attacks intensify, India’s National Commission for Women (NCW) has issued a stern message – “Targeting a woman for seeking justice will not be tolerated in a civil society.”

Zarina, a survivor-turned-activist, rose to national prominence last year after her determined testimony helped convict two influential men in a sexual assault case that shook the Kashmiri town to its core. Hailed by many as “Pahalgam’s Nirbhaya,” her story inspired protests, poetry, and promises of reform. But the tide has recently turned – and the backlash has been swift and vicious.

Hate in the Valley

What began as whispers in the marketplace has turned into relentless cyberbullying and veiled threats on her family. Anonymous posts accuse her of “ruining reputations” and “acting on political motives.” Some local leaders have even publicly questioned the fairness of the trial, reigniting community tensions.

According to Zarina, the campaign is a clear attempt to silence her and intimidate others who may come forward. “I knew seeking justice wouldn’t be easy,” she said in a recent interview. “But I didn’t expect this kind of hate – not from my own people.”

Women Panel Steps In

Reacting to the rising vitriol, NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma made a rare direct statement from Delhi: “We stand by Zarina and every woman who speaks truth to power. Threats and harassment against survivors will be met with legal action.”

The commission has formally asked the Jammu & Kashmir Police to provide enhanced protection for Zarina and her family. A special notice has also been sent to local administrators warning them of consequences for inaction.

“The Valley cannot afford to lose another voice to fear,” said Sharma. “Zarina is not just a symbol – she is a citizen with rights, and we are here to ensure they are respected.”

Grassroots Solidarity

Despite the backlash, there are flickers of solidarity. A group of young women in Anantnag held a candlelight vigil over the weekend in Zarina’s name. On Instagram, the hashtag #StandWithZarina has begun trending, with activists, celebrities, and common citizens expressing outrage over her treatment.

Mehreen Qadri, a social worker in Srinagar, says this is a turning point. “The way we treat Zarina will define whether we truly support women or just offer lip service. It’s time we choose courage over convenience.”

A Message Beyond Borders

The case has sparked discussions beyond Pahalgam. Legal experts note how fragile victories in gender justice remain when society fails to protect its torchbearers. Women’s rights groups across the country are calling for not just police action, but stronger social support systems for survivors.

For Zarina, the struggle continues. “This was never just about me. It’s about the next girl who’s afraid to speak. If I give up now, what message do we send her?”

Conclusion:
Zarina Bhat’s ordeal underscores the double battle women face: first for justice, then for dignity in its aftermath. The NCW’s tough stand may serve as a much-needed reminder – that justice doesn’t end with a verdict, but with how society treats its bravehearts after the headlines fade.
