Tesla CEO Elon Musk has congratulated Siddharth Jain, Executive Director of the Inox Group, for becoming the first India Inc executive to own a Tesla electric vehicle. A Personal Milestone for Siddharth Jain

Siddharth Jain shared his excitement on social media platform X, calling the moment a dream come true. “This one’s for you @ElonMusk. I am beyond thrilled to receive India Inc’s 1st @Tesla. I have been waiting for this precious moment ever since I visited the Tesla Fremont factory in 2017! Dreams do come true,” he wrote.

Musk responded personally, congratulating Jain and adding that Tesla was excited to see its vehicles being embraced by the Indian market. The public exchange between Musk and Jain quickly gained traction online, sparking conversations about the future of Tesla and electric vehicles (EVs) in India.

Tesla’s Entry into India

Tesla officially entered the Indian market on July 15, 2025, with the opening of its first showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Located in the upscale Maker Maxity Mall, the showroom has been designed as an “experience centre” to allow potential customers to explore Tesla’s technology and innovation first-hand.

Shortly after, Tesla opened its second showroom in Delhi’s Aerocity, reinforcing its commitment to a strategic presence in two of India’s largest urban markets. These experience centres aim to introduce Indian customers to Tesla’s portfolio and create awareness about the benefits of electric mobility.

The Model Y – Tesla’s First Offering in India

The first model Tesla has introduced in India is the Model Y, a best-selling crossover SUV globally. The Model Y is available in two variants:

Variant Ex-Showroom Price Key Features
Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) ₹59.89 lakh Entry-level model with excellent range, minimalist interior, and premium safety features.
Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) ₹67.89 lakh Enhanced range, dual-motor setup for better performance, faster acceleration.

The on-road price in Mumbai for the Long Range AWD variant reaches ₹69.15 lakh, making it a premium offering but still competitive compared to luxury SUVs from traditional automakers.

Symbolic First Delivery

The very first delivery of a Tesla in India was made to Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik. The event was symbolic, aimed at encouraging electric vehicle adoption across the state and setting an example for environmentally conscious mobility choices.

Sarnaik emphasized that the delivery was not just about owning a luxury car but also about showing young Indians the importance of shifting to clean energy solutions. His purchase was widely covered in the media as a statement of intent to support the EV ecosystem and infrastructure development in Maharashtra.

Boost for India’s EV Adoption

Tesla’s entry into India is expected to act as a catalyst for the country’s electric mobility transition. India has been aggressively pushing for greater adoption of electric vehicles through schemes such as the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) program, which provides incentives for EV buyers.

Experts believe that Tesla’s presence could accelerate the development of charging infrastructure, encourage competition among domestic and global EV makers, and increase consumer confidence in switching from petrol and diesel cars to electric options.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the enthusiasm, Tesla’s India journey will not be without challenges. High import duties have long been a sticking point for Tesla, making its vehicles expensive compared to other markets. While talks have been ongoing between Tesla and the Indian government to reduce these tariffs, no final agreement has been reached yet.

Local manufacturing could be the solution. If Tesla sets up a Gigafactory or assembly unit in India, it could benefit from reduced costs and government incentives, making its vehicles more accessible to a broader customer base.

Industry Reaction

Siddharth Jain’s milestone has been celebrated by both industry leaders and EV enthusiasts. Many see this as a signal that corporate India is warming up to electric mobility, which could encourage other executives and companies to adopt EVs for their fleets.

The move is also expected to have a trickle-down effect, inspiring luxury car buyers to consider EVs as a viable option. As infrastructure improves, industry experts expect that the demand for premium EVs like Tesla will grow steadily in India.

Tesla and India – A Strategic Fit

India is one of the fastest-growing automotive markets in the world, with a young population and rapidly increasing urbanization. The country’s focus on sustainability, reducing carbon emissions, and transitioning to renewable energy sources aligns with Tesla’s mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy.

Elon Musk has previously expressed optimism about India’s potential as a major market for Tesla, but also highlighted the need for a stable policy framework and a robust supply chain for EV components.

With prominent business leaders like Siddharth Jain stepping forward as early adopters, Tesla’s brand image in India is likely to strengthen, setting the stage for more widespread adoption in the coming years.

Looking Ahead

As Tesla delivers more cars to Indian customers, industry watchers expect a ripple effect on infrastructure development, battery technology investments, and local job creation. The arrival of Tesla could also push Indian automakers like Tata Motors, Mahindra Electric, and others to further innovate and expand their EV portfolios.

Siddharth Jain’s symbolic purchase represents more than personal achievement – it signals a turning point in India’s EV adoption story. With Elon Musk’s acknowledgement adding a global spotlight, this moment may encourage more Indians to consider making the switch to electric.
