India didn’t have any ‘undue advantage’ in Dubai: Gautam Gambhir

adminBy adminMarch 5, 2025

India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has firmly dismissed claims that his team enjoyed an undue advantage by playing all their ICC Champions Trophy matches in Dubai. Following India’s four-wicket victory over Australia in the semi-finals, Gambhir addressed the criticisms head-on, asserting that Dubai served as a neutral venue for India, just as it did for other teams.

Due to security concerns, India opted not to travel to Pakistan, the official host nation, resulting in all their matches being scheduled in Dubai. This arrangement led to suggestions that India benefited from consistent playing conditions and reduced travel fatigue. However, Gambhir refuted these notions, stating, “First of all, this is as neutral a venue for us as it is for any other team. We haven’t practiced here even for a day. We’re practicing at the ICC Academy. If you look at the wickets there and here, the difference is between the ground and the sky. Some people are just perpetual cribbers, man. They’ve got to grow up.”

Gambhir also emphasized that India’s team selection was not influenced by any presumed advantage of playing in Dubai. He highlighted that the squad’s composition, including the number of spinners, was designed for subcontinental conditions in general, not specifically tailored for Dubai’s pitches. “The plan was that if you pick two frontline spinners in the 15-man squad, then even if we played in Pakistan or anywhere, we would have picked two frontline spinners because this was a competition in the subcontinent,” he explained.

Australian captain Steve Smith, after his team’s semi-final loss to India, also downplayed the notion of India’s supposed advantage. He acknowledged that while the Dubai surface suited India’s playing style, the Indian team simply outplayed Australia. “I’m not buying into it. India obviously played some really good cricket here. The surface kind of suits their style with the sp … . They played well, they outplayed … , and they deserve the victory,” Smith remarked.

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, echoed similar sentiments earlier in the tournament, asserting that Dubai was not their home ground and that each pitch at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium had distinct characteristics. He emphasized the team’s need to adapt to varying conditions, stating, “This is not our home, this is Dubai. We don’t play so many matches here. This is new for us too.”

As India advances to the Champions Trophy final, both the team’s management and players remain focused on their performance, dismissing external criticisms and emphasizing their adaptability and preparation in neutral conditions.
