PM Modi in UK: Key Talks on Free Trade Deal, To Meet PM Keir Starmer

July 24, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in the United Kingdom for a high-level diplomatic visit aimed at revitalizing India-UK ties, with a key focus on the much-anticipated India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This marks Modi’s first official visit to the UK since Labour leader Keir Starmer assumed office as Prime Minister earlier this month.

During his three-day visit, PM Modi is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral talks with Starmer and senior UK ministers. The two leaders are expected to discuss strategic cooperation in trade, defense, technology, climate action, and diaspora relations.

Free Trade Agreement Back in Focus

The stalled negotiations over the India-UK Free Trade Agreement will take center stage in Modi’s discussions. The FTA, which has seen 13 rounds of talks since 2022, aims to boost bilateral trade volumes by eliminating tariffs and easing market access. The new UK government has expressed strong interest in closing the deal, seeing it as a cornerstone of Britain’s post-Brexit global trade strategy.

Sources suggest that both sides are optimistic about resolving key sticking points, including tariffs on Scotch whisky, automobiles, and professional mobility for Indian workers.

A Reset in Diplomacy

This visit also marks a significant diplomatic reset following the political transition in the UK. Modi is expected to personally congratulate Starmer and extend India’s commitment to deepening democratic ties. Their meeting is seen as crucial for aligning visions on global challenges, including Indo-Pacific security and counterterrorism.

In a joint statement preview, both sides reaffirmed their shared values of democracy, rule of law, and a commitment to a rules-based international order.

Indian Diaspora and Cultural Diplomacy

PM Modi will also address the Indian diaspora at a large community event in Wembley, where he is likely to highlight the achievements of Indians in the UK and their role in fostering people-to-people connections. The Indian community, which played a prominent role in UK elections and policy advocacy, remains a bridge between the two nations.

Looking Ahead

If successful, the Modi-Starmer meeting could revive momentum in the India-UK relationship and potentially result in a roadmap for signing the FTA later this year. For both leaders, the opportunity is ripe to recalibrate economic and political ties at a time when global partnerships are more important than ever.

This visit could well be a turning point in India-UK relations — a blend of tradition and transformation, with trade and trust at its heart.
