Mumbai Police have opposed the bail application of Shariful Islam Shehzad, the Bangladeshi national accused of attacking actor Saif Ali Khan, citing concerns that he poses a flight risk due to his intentions to flee to Bangladesh. Shehzad, also known as Vijay Das, allegedly stabbed Khan during a robbery attempt at the actor’s Bandra residence on January 16, 2025.
Following the attack, Shehzad reportedly panicked upon seeing his image broadcast on television channels and planned to escape to his native Bangladesh. He contacted his brother in Bangladesh to procure documents to facilitate his return, which helped authorities confirm his identity. Police apprehended Shehzad in Thane after tracing a digital payment he made at a food stall in Worli.

In his bail plea submitted to the Mumbai Sessions Court, Shehzad asserted his innocence, claiming that the case against him is fabricated. His lawyer argued that he has cooperated fully with the investigation and that all key evidence has been collected, suggesting there is no risk of evidence tampering or witness intimidation.
However, given Shehzad’s prior attempt to flee and his lack of ties within the local community, authorities contend that granting bail could result in him absconding, thereby hindering the judicial process. The court is expected to deliberate on the bail application in the coming days.
