Ralph Macchio’s OG The Karate Kid to re-release after 40 years

March 15, 2025

The iconic 1984 martial arts drama, The Karate Kid, is set to return to cinemas on March 21, 2025, marking 40 years since its original release.

This re-release invites audiences to relive the inspiring journey of Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and his mentor, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), on the big screen once again.

Directed by John G. Avildsen and written by Robert Mark Kamen, The Karate Kid tells the story of a young teenager who, after moving to California, learns karate from his apartment’s handyman to defend himself against bullies. The film’s themes of perseverance, mentorship, and self-discovery resonated with audiences worldwide, leading to its enduring legacy.

In India, the re-release is particularly significant as it precedes the upcoming film, Karate Kid: Legends, scheduled to hit theaters on May 30, 2025.

This new installment will see Ralph Macchio reprising his role as Daniel LaRusso alongside Jackie Chan as Mr. Han, bridging the original series with the 2010 reboot. The story introduces a new kung fu prodigy, Li Fong (Ben Wang), who moves from Beijing to New York City and struggles to fit in. With guidance from Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso, Li integrates kung fu and karate styles, leading to a major martial arts competition.

The re-release of the original The Karate Kid offers both longtime fans and new audiences an opportunity to experience the film that started it all, setting the stage for the next chapter in this beloved franchise.
