Richa Chadha on Raising a Girl: “We Live in India, I Have to Buy a Gun”

July 23, 2025

Actress Richa Chadha, who is all set to embrace motherhood with actor-husband Ali Fazal, has sparked conversation with her powerful remarks about raising a daughter in India. In a recent interview, the Fukrey star candidly spoke about her concerns regarding women’s safety in the country, revealing that she often jokes about having to “buy a gun” if they have a girl child.

“We live in India, and sometimes the realities around us are scary,” Richa stated. “If I have a daughter, I feel I will have to buy a gun — not literally maybe, but that’s the level of protection and alertness one needs.”

While her comment was partially tongue-in-cheek, it resonated deeply with many parents who worry about the safety of their children, particularly girls, in an environment where gender-based violence remains a grim reality. Chadha’s frankness shed light on a topic that is often brushed under the carpet in public discourse — the emotional and mental burden parents carry while raising daughters in a country still grappling with patriarchal norms and safety issues.

Richa and Ali, who tied the knot in 2022, have been outspoken advocates of social change through both their work and public statements. With this latest remark, Richa once again demonstrates her willingness to speak uncomfortable truths — not to provoke, but to prompt reflection and action.

As Richa continues to embrace this new phase in life, her words serve as both a warning and a rallying cry: for a safer, more equitable society where raising a girl doesn’t come with fear, but with freedom and pride.
