Sikandar No More? ‘Chhaava’ Beats Salman Khan’s Film in Occupancy on Day 51

adminBy adminApril 7, 2025

In a surprising turn of events for Bollywood’s box office dynamics, Sikandar, Salman Khan’s much-hyped action drama, is now showing signs of losing steam. Despite its powerful start and star-studded appeal, the film has seen a sharp decline in occupancy over the past few weeks. What’s more shocking is that on Day 51, Chhaava—a historical drama with a more modest budget and lesser star power—has overtaken Sikandar in terms of theater occupancy.

The Numbers Tell the Tale

While Sikandar continues to be screened in multiple cities, its Day 51 occupancy fell to 18% across India. In comparison, Chhaava, despite being in its seventh week as well, witnessed an average occupancy of 22%, driven largely by strong word-of-mouth and continued traction in Maharashtra and parts of North India.

Trade analysts had expected Sikandar to maintain a solid grip on the box office, especially with Salman Khan’s magnetic presence. However, Chhaava’s emotionally resonant storyline and critical acclaim seem to be giving it unexpected longevity.

Why Is ‘Chhaava’ Winning?

Chhaava focuses on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and has struck a deep emotional chord with audiences, especially in the Marathi belt. The storytelling, performances, and historical accuracy have earned the film respect and sustained viewership, even without the backing of a massive promotional campaign.

Critics also note that Chhaava offers something fresh—an engaging biopic that balances action, emotion, and cultural pride. On the other hand, Sikandar—while commercially driven—has faced criticism for its predictable plot and over-reliance on Salman Khan’s star power.

Audience Sentiment Shifting?

This shift in audience preference is telling. Viewers seem increasingly open to content-driven cinema, even if it comes from lesser-known banners or stars. The fact that Chhaava is drawing more footfalls than a Salman Khan film after 50 days is indicative of a larger transformation in Bollywood.

What’s Next?

Though Sikandar is still likely to close with strong lifetime numbers, its underwhelming retention in the long run may push producers to rethink formulas that depend solely on superstardom. Meanwhile, Chhaava’s box office story is far from over, and it may well continue to break records in the weeks ahead.

As cinema evolves, it’s clear that content is king—even when up against royalty like Salman Khan.
