Sonalika Joshi, Taarak Mehta’s Madhvi Bhide, Recalls Being Mistaken for a Chain Smoker Due to On-Screen Role

July 19, 2025

Sonalika Joshi, widely loved for her role as Madhvi Bhide in the long-running television sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, recently opened up about a surprising misconception people had about her. In a candid interview, the actress revealed that she was once mistaken for a chain smoker due to a past on-screen role that required her to smoke frequently.

Before rising to national fame through Taarak Mehta, Sonalika appeared in a Marathi serial where her character had a significant smoking habit. “I played a woman who was shown smoking cigarettes in many scenes. It was a demanding role, and we had to shoot multiple takes — so I ended up holding a cigarette most of the time,” she recalled.

However, her convincing portrayal led some viewers to assume that she was a smoker in real life too. “Some people even came up to me and said, ‘Aap toh chain smoker lagti ho’ (You look like a chain smoker). I was shocked and had to explain it was all part of acting,” she added with a laugh.

Sonalika, who is a non-smoker in real life, took the confusion in good spirits and saw it as a compliment to her acting. “It showed I did justice to the role, but it also reminded me how deeply people associate actors with the characters they play,” she shared.

Known today for her sanskaari and warm-hearted character Madhvi Bhide, wife of the strict but lovable society secretary Atmaram Bhide, Sonalika Joshi has become a household name across India. Despite the early misconceptions, her current image on Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is that of a responsible homemaker and small-business owner who runs a popular pickles and papad venture.

Her journey from being mistaken for a smoker to becoming one of Indian television’s most adored ‘aunties’ highlights both the power and pitfalls of typecasting in the industry.
