Sunil Gavaskar on India vs Pakistan at Asia Cup: Players will go by government decision

adminBy adminAugust 20, 2025

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has weighed in on the much-discussed India–Pakistan clash in the upcoming Asia Cup, stressing that players will adhere to whatever decision the Indian government takes regarding bilateral cricketing ties.

Speaking on the matter, Gavaskar said that while fans are eager to witness the high-voltage rivalry, cricketers have no say in the political decisions that govern such contests. “It’s not in the hands of the players. They will play wherever the government asks them to play. If the government decides India should not travel or host Pakistan, then that’s what will happen,” he remarked.

The former India captain underlined that while sports can sometimes act as a bridge between nations, the India–Pakistan cricketing relationship has always been shaped by political and diplomatic considerations. Matches between the two sides have largely been restricted to ICC and ACC events, with bilateral series suspended for over a decade.

Gavaskar added that the players’ focus remains firmly on their preparation and performance, rather than the off-field debates. “Cricketers are professionals. Their job is to be ready for any opposition, at any venue. The rest is for the government and the cricket boards to decide,” he explained.

The Asia Cup, which often draws immense attention due to the arch-rivalry, has once again stirred conversations around whether the clash will go ahead smoothly. While the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been keen on hosting matches, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has consistently stated that participation is subject to government clearance.

As anticipation builds for the marquee encounter, Gavaskar’s words serve as a reminder that cricket, though a passion for millions, remains inseparable from the larger geopolitical landscape when it comes to India and Pakistan.
