Virat Kohli or Sachin Tendulkar: Who Challenged James Anderson More?

adminBy adminJune 17, 2025

When it comes to cricketing battles that define eras, few matchups are as compelling as those between a legendary batter and a world-class fast bowler. James Anderson, England’s most successful Test bowler and arguably one of the greatest pacers in history, has bowled to both Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli—two giants of Indian cricket—but the nature of his battles with each was strikingly different. The question that often sparks debate among fans and analysts alike is: Who challenged Anderson more—Tendulkar or Kohli?

Tendulkar vs Anderson: The Early Duels

Sachin Tendulkar faced James Anderson in the early 2000s, when the Englishman was still finding his feet in international cricket. The two first clashed in 2002, when Anderson was only 20 years old. At that time, Tendulkar was already a seasoned maestro, having played international cricket for over a decade.

In their head-to-head encounters in Test cricket, Anderson dismissed Tendulkar nine times, more than any other bowler. However, it’s essential to put those dismissals in context. Anderson had the advantage of bowling on seaming English tracks and was evolving with every series. Tendulkar, though nearing the twilight of his career, still managed to counter Anderson with classic technique and grace on multiple occasions.

Kohli vs Anderson: A Rivalry Reborn

Virat Kohli’s duels with Anderson began in earnest during India’s tour of England in 2014. This series became infamous for Kohli’s struggles, as Anderson dismissed him four times in ten innings, exposing weaknesses outside off stump. Kohli averaged just 13.40 during the tour, and Anderson was seen as his nemesis.

However, the tables turned dramatically in 2018, when Kohli returned to England as captain with a mission to prove himself. He did so in style, scoring 593 runs in the series at an average of 59.30, and, most notably, Anderson could not dismiss him even once in the entire series.

This evolution of Kohli—from vulnerability to mastery—against Anderson makes their rivalry fascinating. It was a mental and technical battle that Kohli eventually conquered, especially given the conditions Anderson thrives in.

Who Challenged Anderson More?

From a pure statistical and narrative arc perspective, Virat Kohli arguably posed a greater long-term challenge to James Anderson. While Anderson had initial success, Kohli fought back, adapted his technique, and emerged dominant in later encounters. Tendulkar, on the other hand, faced Anderson at a time when the bowler was peaking, but the Indian legend did not have a similar comeback opportunity before his retirement in 2013.

Tendulkar tested a young Anderson with class and finesse. Kohli tested a seasoned Anderson with resilience and evolution. In terms of drama, rivalry, and redemption, Kohli’s challenge stands out as the more complete storyline.

Conclusion

While Anderson managed to dismiss both Indian greats multiple times, Virat Kohli’s ability to come back from failure and dominate Anderson in his own backyard may give him the edge. Yet, in many ways, both players brought out the best in England’s pace wizard—making these rivalries iconic chapters in cricket history.
