Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Retired on Their Own Will, BCCI Has No Role: Rajeev Shukla Clarifies

adminBy adminJuly 16, 2025

In the wake of the emotional retirement announcements by Indian cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from T20 Internationals, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla has come forward to clear the air surrounding the circumstances of their decisions. In a strong statement, Shukla asserted that both stalwarts retired on their own accord and that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had no role in influencing their exit.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Shukla said, “Let me clarify once and for all — the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from T20Is was completely their personal decision. The BCCI neither asked nor pressured them to step away. These players have given immense contributions to Indian cricket and their decisions deserve respect.”

The clarification comes amid widespread speculation that the BCCI may have nudged the two icons to make way for the next generation of cricketers following India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph in the West Indies. Kohli and Sharma, who played instrumental roles in India’s victorious campaign, announced their retirements shortly after lifting the trophy.

Kohli, who scored a match-winning half-century in the final, declared his retirement in the post-match presentation, stating, “This was my last T20I for India. There couldn’t have been a better time to bow out.” Rohit followed suit minutes later, saying, “It’s been an incredible journey. This is the perfect ending for my T20I career.”

Rajeev Shukla’s comments are aimed at silencing the theories that emerged in the aftermath of their retirement, particularly online chatter suggesting a behind-the-scenes push by the BCCI to refresh the squad ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka and India.

“Players like Rohit and Virat are legends of the game. The board has only admiration and gratitude for them. If they had chosen to continue, the BCCI would have welcomed it. But they chose to make way on a high, which speaks volumes of their character and selflessness,” Shukla added.

Both cricketers leave behind a glittering T20I legacy. Rohit Sharma retires as the most capped Indian T20I player and the only Indian to score four centuries in the format. Kohli exits as India’s highest run-getter in T20 Internationals, known for his consistency and match-winning prowess.

Cricket fans across the world have paid tribute to the duo, whose careers have spanned over a decade and have significantly shaped India’s modern cricketing era. Social media was flooded with emotional messages and memories, highlighting their impact on Indian cricket.

With the baton now being passed to younger talents like Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, India’s T20 future appears bright. However, the void left by Rohit and Virat’s absence will undoubtedly be felt — not just in terms of performance, but also in leadership, experience, and aura.

Rajeev Shukla ended his remarks by reiterating that both players will continue to remain valuable assets to Indian cricket in the longer formats and possibly in mentorship roles. “We’re sure that in one way or another, they’ll continue to contribute to Indian cricket. Their journey is not over,” he said.

As fans bid farewell to two modern greats from the T20I stage, one thing is clear — their retirement was a decision born out of timing, legacy, and love for the game, not boardroom politics.
