Yoga Gives Direction of Peace as World Today Witnesses Unrest: PM Modi

adminBy adminJune 21, 2025

On the occasion of the 11th International Day of Yoga, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the relevance of yoga in a world grappling with turmoil and uncertainty. Addressing a large gathering in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, PM Modi called yoga “a beacon of peace” that offers inner stability amid growing global unrest.

“In today’s world filled with conflict, stress and restlessness, yoga gives a direction of peace,” said the Prime Minister. “It connects body, mind and soul, and brings harmony not only within ourselves but also with the world around us.”

Thousands of yoga enthusiasts, including students, citizens, and armed forces personnel, participated in the celebrations held on the banks of Dal Lake. The tranquil setting of Kashmir served as a symbolic backdrop for Modi’s message of healing and unity.

A Global Movement Rooted in Indian Heritage

Reflecting on yoga’s evolution from an ancient Indian practice to a global movement, Modi expressed pride in India’s cultural legacy. “The world is embracing yoga not just as a fitness routine, but as a holistic way of living. It is a matter of pride that yoga, born in our land, is now practiced in every corner of the world,” he said.

Since its recognition by the United Nations in 2014, June 21 has been observed annually as International Day of Yoga, with themes ranging from health and harmony to climate action. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Self and Society,” highlights yoga’s role in fostering both personal well-being and social cohesion.

Bridging Divides with Breath and Balance

PM Modi also emphasized yoga’s ability to bridge social and cultural divides. “Yoga doesn’t require any language, country, or religion. It is universal. It belongs to everyone and connects us all,” he noted, urging citizens to adopt yoga as a daily practice to cultivate resilience and compassion.

He encouraged schools, workplaces, and institutions to include yoga in daily routines, especially for youth who are increasingly facing mental health challenges.

A Call for Peace and Sustainability

In a subtle yet firm reference to ongoing geopolitical conflicts and environmental crises, Modi remarked, “We must understand that peace of mind leads to peace in the world. If we are calm inside, we can respond wisely outside. Yoga gives us that clarity.”

Concluding his address, the Prime Minister urged the global community to look at yoga not just as a practice, but as a philosophy of coexistence and balance—“a timeless solution for a world in search of peace.”

As the world marks another International Day of Yoga, PM Modi’s words stand as a reminder that sometimes, the path to global peace begins with the simple act of sitting still and breathing deeply.
